Edge Reinforcement


Removed from NP21.FP4. You could get the same results by preparing the existing ground before calculating the road.

Use this function to design the edge reinforcement.

  • This function can be activated from the dialog 'Subgrade' and selecting the tab 'Edge Reinforcement'.

Edge reinforcement is inserted to avoid or reduce the problems of cracking in the road's wearing course and settlement along the edge of the road.

  • This is especially applicable in the assimilation and, at the same time, the widening of existing roads with poor soil along the edges.
  • Edge reinforcement implies that part of the old road shoulder outside the edge of the existing road will be replaced by new fill material.
  • The edge of the existing road must be defined using illustration codes in the terrain data.
  • The principle behind edge reinforcement is shown in the figure below.
  • Embankments and cuttings refer to the new road in above figure.

The circumstances, which allow the edge reinforcement to be inserted, are that the edge of the existing road lies within the foot of the embankment or the bottom of the drainage ditch on a new road.

  • First, the edge reinforcement will be inserted without taking account of the road top surface and pavement.
  • Then an edge reinforcement surface will be inserted with a gradient of 2:1 from the edge of the existing road and down to the user-specified depth.
  • From there, a new surface will be laid out with a downward gradient of 1:50 until it cuts the terrain top surface or road top surface.
  • If the depth defined for an embankment is such that the bottom surface would theoretically fall outside the embankment foot, the edge reinforcement will be terminated with a vertical surface up to the embankment foot.
  • The equivalent is true in a cutting.
  • If the bottom surface lies below, theoretically there is no cutting.
  • Novapoint Road Design inserts a vertical termination surface against the outermost ditch surface with negative gradient.
  • The edge reinforcement will then be limited by the lower edge of the road pavement, the edge reinforcement surfaces, and the terrain top surface/road top surface as shown in the figure below.

The dialog box 'Subgrade' with the tab 'Edge Reinforcement' is shown below.

  • Insert: Use this button to insert a row in the right pane of the dialog box.
    • Select a row, above which a new row is to be inserted and click the button.
  • Delete: Deletes the selected row from the right pane of the dialog box.
  • When the cursor points the corner of the cell, plus symbol will pop up, hold the symbol and drag to copy the contents of the cell.

Section

Define the section using the columns 'From' and 'To', where edge reinforcement is to be designed.

Depth of fill

Define the depth (meter) of embankment for edge reinforcement. Use positive vales.

Depth of cut

Define the depth (meter) of cutting for edge reinforcement. Use positive vales.

Slope edge surface

The slope of the edge reinforcement surfaces has fixed values in Novapoint Road Design and cannot be changed.

Slope of road bed

The slope of the roadbed surfaces for edge reinforcement has fixed values in Novapoint Road Design and cannot be changed.

Use this button to execute the function.
